Office of Surface and Mining
Job Site Services, Inc. (JSS) contracted with US Department of Interior to backfill and grout improperly abandoned mine shafts in Michigan. Eight coal mine shafts, at 6 locations, were properly abandoned. Due to working on collapse zone areas, personnel and equipment tie off practices were used.
JSS installed 3 inch PVC casing using a sonic drill rig on a 45 degree angle to hit various points in each of the 120 to 140 foot deep mine shafts. JSS connected to each casing and pumped precise grout mixtures into each shaft until proper abandonment was achieved. Field staff completed 9,200 linear feet of sonic core drilling, 6,600 linear feet of casing, and used 1,000 cubic yards of cement.
